Yes Brent, I was a little bemused to be asked but all the guys that I approached to write a chapter said yes, without hesitation, and I became very excited at the prospect But with the contract it began to dawn on me that this wasn't what I wanted and I actually felt great relief to be out of it. Although the publisher was happy enough to ask me to let them know when the book I wanted to write was ready, I don't think that I will. I can't see it ending up as what I envisage if I went that route.

I had a vaguely similar experience. I was approached one time to author a new book on the HMMWV. However, I had to follow the publishers guidelines and not pursue my own vision of what I would like to do. Rather than take my time and sources to make someone else's vision a reality, I politely declined. Someday I will do something but it will be my vision.

The parallel of your situation to mine is pretty incredible. Good job with looking inside your feelings and sticking to what you believe in.

Actually the publisher has told me to stay in touch and if I have a proposal for a book then contact him. Also I have been asked to write the book that I actually want to write. Although it is an e-book it means that there are no restrictions on space.

You know I agree with you on this Mal.

I am wondering if you are now going to put your own proposal to a publisher or wait to see if you are approached another time ?

Well that has been an interesting couple of weeks!
I was approached to write a book on modelling WWII aircraft, something that I would love to do but the subject matter is so vast that, as well as asking "why me" I declined. Apparently I had been spotted offering advice on forums. That's cool but I don't build very fast and to construct model aircraft to represent "WWII" would take all my stash and I won't live long enough to be able to do that!
I was then asked if I would write a book on "Finishing Model Aircraft". Now that is more manageable but I finish models in my own way and that doesn't warrant a book so I asked some of my modelling friends if they would write me a chapter and they all said yes My Aim was to show different techniques to finish model aircraft. My ultimate goal was to have these finishing techniques explained in a way that doesn't just tell you what to do but, very much more importantly, how to actually do it. Now this is actually quite a tall order; think about it. How do you put into words something that you physically do? You don't you use plenty of pictures, with descriptive text.
So when the contract arrived and stated 40,000-45,000 words with 250 photos I knew that it wouldn't work, especially as I had already been sent 105 photos, many of which contained 3 pictures with a caption box (you may recognise the format?) by one of the contributors. These photos also contain photos showing the use of my Miracle Paint Masks, some of which had my logo in the corner. I wrote back with my concerns and, basically, I was sent a book from their railway modelling series to show me the format. This reinforced my belief that this wouldn't work plus I was told that branding wasn't allowed! That is it then, if the contributors can't say what products are used then how can they explain "how they do it"?
So I had no choice but to decline. There is more to this but rather than tell the full story and bore you further, It was agreed that the word count could be less and the photo count more. However I had already told the contributors that it wasn't going ahead and of course, the photos that I had already been sent couldn't be used, so the book would be unbalanced. I also had the feeling of having escaped!
Although I won't be writing this book I do fancy writing one but on a subject that I really do know about
