The Highwayman

I was drawn to the figure because of the subject matter (I’m not sure why but always had a thing for highwaymen?) and the animation / pose of him. For me there seems to be the correct amount of movement within the jacket etc. I also sometimes find some figures have too much movement either in the pose or the clothing movement just looks wrong and for me spoils a figure. For me this is just right. The figure is a good clean casting, consisting of 6 parts, with a good level of detail, no air bubbles and the resin was a joy to work with. The casting stubs were extremely easy to remove and the fit of the parts was extremely good. I did get a little sanding happy with the left arm which meant I had a minor join to fill when I attached the arm but that was all my own doing. It was a very quick easy construction which allowed the painting stage to be undertaken a lot sooner. I also think the basic base is a fantastic idea as it allows the modeller to detail it however they see fit rather than having set bits so they will all look the same. You can really go to town, long grasses, clumps, weeds, mud etc. and make it completely individual.
Painting

The figure and base were a complete joy to paint. I know my colour scheme may seem a bit boring as I went for the traditional black jacket etc. partly because when someone says highwayman I immediately think dark / black clothing etc. The photos really do not do this model justice as there are several different shades of blacks and greys used but my little camera does struggle to pick these up even in macro mode. I used acrylics to paint the figure and base coat the base. I did use Darkstar Molten Metals for the guns, buttons and buckles on the figures. The Darkstar paints were fantastic to work with and so easy to use especially with them being dropper bottles so much easier than leaving a lid off a jar of paint. I did also used the Darkstar Earth pigments on the base for the earth and mud again they were a delight to use and I found the pigments to be a very true match to the colours they represented.

Conclusion

Overall a fantastic kit and I cannot wait to get hold of some more of the Darkstar figures and busts to complete. The service from Chris at Darkstar was also extremely good. These really have reignited my interest in building figures as before seeing The Highwayman I could have quite happily never made another figure again, now I cannot wait to get some more added to the stash and finish off some others that were put into storage.

Alan, That is a nicely sculpted figure. The subject is very interesting, too. Your painting enhances it as well.
